We are deeply concerned by the recent statements of the Turkish and Turkish Cypriot authorities regarding the opening of fenced city of Varosha under the Turkish Cypriot administration.
The two leaders agreed on 21 May to reopen the crossing points in stages, initially for specific groups. They did this on the basis of the approval of the Bicommunal Technical Committee on Health. Experts have explained that the spread of Covid-19 has been contained in both parts of the island.
Today is the 17th anniversary of the opening of the crossing points by the Turkish Cypriot side on 23 April 2003.
Between April 2003 and March 2020, there have been around 20 million crossings with peaceful intermingling of fellow Cypriots, after 29 years of being kept apart.
The pandemic crisis is a stark reminder to all that cooperation is needed in order for the necessary measures to be taken that will ensure the protection of all the people on the island. Taking partitionist measures in tackling the pandemic makes the prospects of a united Cyprus even more difficult. We are stronger in overcoming it when we are united.
